O. Henry's understanding of the ironies of life and the dreams and desires that move ordinary people to do extraordinary things is evident in a collection of twenty-six short stories that appeared originally in the New York World

O. Henry (William Sydney Porter, 1862-1910) was an American short-story writer. In his writing, O. Henry was able to catch the color and movement of the city and showed a genuine sympathy for ordinary people. Some of his works include "Cabbages and Kings", "Roads of Destiny", and "Strictly Business" among many others.
It's debatable whether the seven short stories in this collection truly constitute the "best" of O. Henry's hundreds of published works, but that debate can be set aside. What's important is that both the tales and the narration by Michael Hanson are excellent. O. Henry has fallen out of fashion in academic circles, but his stories remain sufficiently popular among modern readers to assure that this package will be welcome among library patrons. Divided into "New York Stories" and "Western Stories," the selections range from the classic "Gift of the Magi" to the playful "Ransom of Red Chief," about an incorrigible brat who turns the tables on his kidnappers. Moreover, Hanson's delightful reading is a special treat; his carefully modulated and mellow voice helps transport the listener back to the early 20th century, when O. Henry wrote these tales. Recommended for all general collections. Kent Rasmussen, Thousand Oaks, CA
