Reviews

Books on birds of prey (hawks and owls) are legion. This one stands out because of its superb photography (150 color photos) and low price, but the text has certain limitations. Ten chapters group birds by habitat, habit, or methods of hunting, e.g., "Eagles that feed on fish." Owls rate only two chapters. The text, while generally informed, is brief and does little more than adorn the photos. Although worldwide in scope, this book has a slight British bias and little up-to-date information. The fact that many now believe vultures are more closely related to storks than birds of prey is not mentioned. Nor is the recent release back into the wild of California Condors and Whitetailed Eagles. There is no bibliography. Several captions misidentify birds, and the Ferruginous Hawk on p. 74 is flying upside down. The charming antiquarian drawings in the introductions are not credited. Other minor inaccuracies flaw the text. In spite of these drawbacks, Birds of Prey remains a fine collection of photographs well worth its modest price.
