PreS-Gr 1—A good selection for showing the importance of responsibility and of being a good neighbor. Stanley the hamster has a very important job in his community—he is the mailman. Readers follow Stanley as he goes on his rounds delivering the mail. Readers learn about the personalities of all the neighbors and how their mail can make them happy or exasperated. The illustrations are a particular delight, as they are bold and clear and move the text along skillfully. The illustrations and text present excellent sequencing and pacing. Teachers and librarians can use these visuals to teach about characters, directions, and relative location. Stanley must make decisions about how to best do his job, and kids will relate to him having to do things like taking a bath and getting ready for bed.
