The male characters Prado realizes in the three- and four-page comics stories collected here are hard. They are also, depending on the person, stupid, venal, vicious, callous, and brutal. The women, the children, and those with any power are even harder, though often smarter. A quarrel in a Prado story invariably comes to blows, destruction, and an ambulance; so, for that matter, does every bit of rest and relaxation. Business rips off customers unmercifully, but government squeezes, too: when it adjusts a man's social-security benefits upward, it simultaneously sues for reimbursement, with interest, of all the mistakenly lower benefits already dispensed. Nevertheless, Prado's victims of injustice usually richly deserve punishment: every man who hits on a woman who then rejects, beats, and sues him is in fact a sexist jerk. Brilliantly drawn and colored, Prado's work most nearly approximates sarcastic sketch humor, like American comedy-club or Saturday Night Live fare. But it is much angrier and much bitterer, offering no comfort to pieties of either the Right or the Left. Damn funny, though. Ray Olson
