Illustrated for accessibility and written with the precision of fine technical writing, this is arguably the best book to help those without any computer background understand what makes a computer tick. Written by an Intel employee, it definitely has a bias toward PCs, totally ignoring the Motorola chip used by the Macintosh, but this book is nonetheless Highly Recommended.
