From School Library Journal

Grade 5-8-Illustrated with a smattering of well-chosen period reproductions, this concise series entry focuses on an important event that will be little known by many of today's students. In crisp, no-nonsense prose, Altman sets the scene by summarizing the industrial revolution in America, gives accounts of previous labor unrest and the creation of unions, provides biographical information, and looks at the hard times following the Panic of 1893. Pullman is described as "part inventor, part natural-born mogul" who "prided himself on his absolute control over every detail of his business" yet was at a loss to understand what was going on. The organizing efforts of Eugene V. Debs of the American Railway Union and the resulting strike are recounted. This slim volume leaves as moving an impression and understanding of the importance of the happenings as a far weightier book might.
