Grade 5-8-Three readable, concise series entries, each illustrated with clear, relevant, nonstandard period reproductions in black and white and full color. One flaw occurs in the otherwise excellent two-page map in Transcontinental Railroad. The key indicates that the route of the Central Pacific Railroad is printed in blue, but the line has been overprinted with yellow to show the "vacant" lands on either side of the railroad bed, making it a distinct green. Each book has a list for further reading and a bibliography; the bibliography in Harper's Ferry gives the sources for quotations in the text, but, strangely, the other books do not differentiate between their two lists. All three volumes cover their subjects well and occasionally include unusual tidbits of information that enliven the exposition. Informative, interesting, and attractive titles.
