Though it provides a small map for each topic, the strength of this work for elementary-school students is its pictures, not its maps. An introduction defines civilization and explains briefly how archaeologists work. The body of the work treats some 40 civilizations from prehistory through the Renaissance. Each is accorded a double-page spread consisting of a map, pictures, and brief commentary. In the case of civilizations about which much is known, such as the ancient Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians, the treatment can only scratch the surface. In the case of those about which less is commonly known, such as the Akkadians, the Minoans, or the Etruscans, articles are more informative. Four early civilizations--the Sumerians and Akkadians, Ancient Egypt, the Indus Valley, and ancient China--are grouped together at the beginning of the book. Other civilizations are grouped geographically. Because of the arrangement--one section chronological and the others geographical--the time chart listing all the civilizations is an especially helpful feature. There is also an index. Antony Mason is widely published in the area of anthropology. The Children's Atlas of Civilization has limited reference value, except for the pictures and the time line. As an attractive and readable overview of the subject, however, it will find readers in all young people's libraries.
