Reviews

This is a basic bibliographic handbook on theme-related storytimes, aimed at lower elementary school teachers and librarians. The book is divided into theme chapters, each suggesting books for read-alouds, booktalks, and other activities. In each category, Sitarz lists books with full bibliographic information (minus ISBN numbers) and lengthy annotations. There are 21 chapters covering a wide spectrum of interests, including "Cooks and Cookery," "Games and Sports," and "Mysteries and Detectives." There are two indexes, one for titles and another for authors, editors, and illustrators. Given that suggested activities are central to the book's purpose, a list grouping titles by activity is strangely lacking. Most of the read-aloud suggestions are picture books with excellent storytelling material. The "Booktalks" chapter highlights longer picture books or easy chapter novels. The unique part of this bibliography is the section in each chapter on activities. The author has gone to great lengths to find amusing, creative ways to extend stories. For instance, after a session of fractured fairy tales, she suggests a rap rendition of "Little Red Riding Hood" called "Little Rap Riding Hood." For the most part, the titles suggested have been published within the past 10 years. Almost all are still in print. This is a useful storyteller's handbook that brings together interesting themes and approaches for enriching the story circle.?Cynthia Stilley, Flint (MI) Public Library

As every librarian knows, picture books for older children have become a major part of the publishing industry. Building on this base, Sitarz has put together programs on 21 topics that can be used with children in kindergarten through third grade. The programs include read-alouds, poetry, songs, and activities. The topics that the programs are built around include fractured fairy tales, tricks and tricksters, scary tales, and magic and magicians. Clearly, much thought has been put into adapting these themes to books and activities. Librarians will find this volume easy to use and a helpful aid in planning programs for kids just past the story hour stage. Ilene Cooper
