Synopsis

Turn your students into lifelong learners! Pathways to Knowledge(r) is an information process model that teachers and school librarians use with students to help them learn to gather, evaluate, and use information. The Pathways Model follows many of the Information Literacy Standards set forth by AASL and AECT and provides a structure for students to pursue inquiry learning. The five chapters focus on the Pathways Model, inquiry learning, instructional strategies, electronic tools and resources that enable the research process, and strategies for changing the curriculum to a focus on inquiry learning. The appendix includes three thematic units, graphic organizers, and reproducible planning guides. A very useful resource for K-12 educators and school library media specialists!

Reviews

An introduction to the process of inquiry learning and an explanation of how Pathways to KnowledgeR can be applied. Following an overview of this model designed "to find, use, and evaluate information" and short scenarios to illustrate each stage in the process, the authors discuss learning through investigation, curriculum design, and constructivism ("building knowledge- through dynamic interaction with information and experience"). Next, they provide ideas and strategies on how to get started; scenarios illustrate how collaboration and planning are necessary elements in the process. Suggestions for using technology and ideas on how to implement a change into the current curriculum are included. There are appendixes on the Pathways to KnowledgeR model and planning guides for three sample topics: heroes, whales, and Native Americans. The authors provide a lucid and useful guide to incorporating inquiry into all subjects across the curriculum and a model that will increase student interest and motivation.
