Children will delight in creating their very own art museum, participating in a storytelling festival, holding a yummy dinner theatre, creating a keen jeans book bag, and much more. In addition, each chapter contains a list of ideas that serve as springboards for activities that you can develop on your own. With writing projects, wordplay, arts and crafts, dramatics, math problems, history lessons, and more, this guide makes it easy to engage young learners while building literacy and reading skills, along with a love of books and reading. Grades K-6

JAN IRVING former Children's Librarian and Youth Services Supervisor, is a writer and consultant in the field of children's literature and library services, based in Overland Park, Kansas.
It's common knowledge that using stories helps both children and adults engage with subject matter and relate to what is presented. In 10 chapters, this readable text introduces a range of books and subject areas coupled with literary forms and genres aimed at elementary children. Each chapter begins with an introduction to the subject area of focus, a literature base, a bibliography, and at least two full-scale programs, one for a public library setting and one for a school venue. Additional takes on the topic act as chapter conclusions. Reading programs, art, math, food, storytelling, poetry, booktalks, literary heritage, and the power of literature to enrich and heal are all addressed. The handbook concludes with an accurate index and solid bibliography. Black line masters are included, and instructions for projects are detailed and clear. This sound professional resource will enhance programming in either the public library or the school media center. Ann Welton
