This valuable new reference not only includes population and demographic data for each of the 194 countries surveyed but also addresses various demographic issues. Part 1 presents a series of essays on issues such as unsustainable population growth, demographic doctrine, migration, and the demographics of transportation and communication. Qualified authors warn that the numbers tell the story, and the stories are alarming. Both quantity of human beings and quality of life are discussed. Part 2 presents the statistical table for world and regional data and for all the countries. Introductory text for each country includes a geographic description, population and racial characteristics, and a brief political and economic history. Tables cover geography, population, ethnicity, language, religion, vital statistics, per capita GDP, labor force and unemployment, healthcare, education, and communications. Charts and graphs vary with each country and illustrate topics such as number of females in school, televisions per 1000 persons, and number of physicians. A chronology of the country is also frequently included. Most of the data are for 1995, but 1980 and 1965 data are included when available, making some trend analysis possible. Data are drawn from sources like the CIA World Fact Book, the UN Demographic Yearbook, and the UN Statistical Yearbook as well as books and periodicals listed in the Further Reading sections found throughout. This work is similar in coverage to the United Nations Demographic Yearbook, but it is arranged by country rather than by demographic characteristics. An excellent source for this type of basic demographic data on a global level; recommended for public and academic libraries.ASylvia Andrews, Indiana State Lib., Indianapolis
