The four New Testament Gospels can be approached from and with very different perspectives. Professor Weren offers a readable and illuminating survey of the Gospels based on years of teaching university students. The first part focuses on "synchronic" approaches, which concentrate on the text itself. Here the literary aspects are in the foreground, including discussions of the limits of a text, structural analysis, narrative analysis, and meaning in context. The second part focuses on "diachronic" approaches, examining the phenomenon that texts in the Gospels go back to early traditions, and including discussions of historical criticism, form and redaction criticism, along with consideration of duplicate and triple texts and the relation between John and the Synoptics. A third part examines relations between Gospel texts and other passages in the Bible, and also considers Jewish exegesis and the apocryphal Gospels. A final part looks again at the question of the historical Jesus.Brief theoretical introductions are followed by examples and illustrations, which are meant to serve as encouragement to personal exploration. Here, then, is an excellent, usable introduction to the study of the Gospels.Wim Weren is Professor of New Testament Exegesis in the Theological Faculty of the University of Tilburg, The Netherlands.

"Windows On Jesus is an impressive, scholarly, and accessible introduction to a systematic, insightful, and informative contemplation of the New Testament Gospels.' —The Midwest Book Review (James A. Cox Midwest Book Review)
"Weren's explanations are clear and lively; his many illustrations bring the texts alive and show the value of methodical study..."— Daniel J. Harrington (Daniel J. Harrington America: The National Catholic Weekly)
"In Windows on Jesus Weren makes the fruits of his labors accessible both to students and educated lay people while not succembing to the danger of ‘dumbing down’ the material...Weren’s work addresses issues which will be of interest to all who teach the gospels...an excellent resource for teachers. I highly recommend it for those who use the gospels as their primary text and are looking for a work that can assist students in becoming familiar with the tools and tasks of gospel exegesis while not distracting them from the text. The questions and exercises the author includes at the end of each chapter provides ample material to keep students busy (read: productive) and interested." —Christopher McMahon, Mt. St. Mary’s College, Review of Biblical Literature (Christopher McMahon, Mt. St. Mary’s College Review of Biblical Literature)
"This clearly written book covers the most pressing methodological issues in exegesis of the Gospels. It is an excellent introductory textbook."—Fred W. Burnett (Fred W. Burnett)
