A lesbian romance in Europe in the aftermath of World War II between Bronia, a Polish refugee, and Pascale, an American soldier. Bronia dresses as a man and the troops think Pascale is having an affair with a man.

In the last months of WW II, Pascale, an American translator serving in the U. S. Women's Army Corps bound west out of Germany with her unit, sees a refugee on the station platform, wistfully contemplating her train. The refugee is dressed like a young man, but Pascale, intuitively knowing that it is a woman, pulls her aboard as the train starts to roll.
These two women, thrown together by chance, torn apart by the destructive forces of wartime Europe, struggle to find each other again across a ravaged continent. Pascale is as fearless with her heart as with her ideals; her Polish refugee, who has survived years of desperation and danger, has the cunning of a wolf.
In their quest to reunite they are helped, hindered and loved by many women. There's Nell, famous international war correspondent, hard-boiled, soft-hearted, and well-connected; Lucia, an Army nurse too ready to please herself: Sibylle, a French prostitute and German collaborator, longing for love; Corinne, a competent and proper WAC officer, guided by hopeless passion as she bends military rules.
Caro Clarke was born in Canada, grew up in oil towns from Alaska to Newfoundland, and now lives in London, England. She has been an academic, a carpenter, and a minder (bodyguard). She presently works in publishing and lives with her partner and the obligatory writer's cat. When asked about the "love at first sight" theme of her novel, she said, "authors are always told to write what they know."
