How do fish breathe? Can bulls really see red? Did unicorns really exist? Why do wolves howl at the moon? Can you get to China by digging a hole?
Here in paperback are four outstanding books that will whet the appetite of any child who is curious about the world and how it works. Dr. Myers answers questions in a warm, informative manner that helps young readers understand the complexity of science. Boys and girls discover that science needn't be dull and dry--it can be fun and exciting. What makes these books even more special is that they feature questions and answers that have been collected from a quarter century of Highlights for Children. These are real questions from real kids.

Dr. Jack Myers (deceased) was professor emeritus of zoology at the University of Texas and a member of the National Academy of Sciences. He lived in Austin, Texas. From School Library Journal:
Grade 3-6-- A collection of questions sent to Highlights for Children over an unspecified period, answered by science editor Myers. The questions are not unusual, and are competently answered. While there is some vague relationship between one entry and the next, there's no chapter organization or other guide to help readers see the logic employed. The illustrations are of average quality, and in a variety of styles from cartoon to airbrush. The names and hometowns of the children who wrote in are included, a feature that may add authenticity but is mostly superfluous and distracting. The final page has a topical index with entries such as: ``Airplanes, Pages 50, 54.'' Some children love books like this, which help them gain an understanding of small facts from larger contexts; libraries with high demand for such titles will want this one. --Dorcas Hand, Annunciation Orthodox School, Houston
