The children in the story watch the development of the dogs' personalities and instincts, and sadly say goodbye when the animals leave for new homes. While the text is sometimes a bit dry, the pictures and clever layout are truly charming. This title complements Cole's My Puppy Is Born (Morrow, 1991), the Fischer-Nagels' A Puppy Is Born (Putnam, 1985), Selsam's How Puppies Grow (Scholastic, 1990), and Hess's Life Begins for Puppies (Scribners, 1978; o.p.). Its outstanding full-color photographs merit its place on any library shelf. For animal lovers, there can never be too many books that - tell a visual story such as this one.
