From Kirkus Reviews:
The life and habits of the red fox, captured in jewel-toned images and spare, direct prose. This factual book about the red fox reads like a story, highlighting a small but telling incident: the fox carefully stalking its prey in the grass, pouncing on a mouse, and gobbling it down in two quick gulps as three fox cubs look on. Underneath the pictures and in the margins appear hand-lettered snippets of information about the fox, explaining when cubs are born, how they are fed, the sounds that a fox makes, what their tracks look like, and various details about their fur and tails. The combination of factual data with a more narrative approach succeeds and will likely engage young readers even as it instructs. And the illustrations are outstanding. Even children too young too understand the information contained here will enjoy making up their own stories about the bold, graceful creature they see portrayed. From Booklist:
Ages 3-6. A simple story is combined with information about foxes in this book from the Read and Wonder series. One afternoon, a fox catches a mouse in the meadow and cats. When he's startled by a bird, he barks to his cubs to hide in their den and runs away. The large-print text tells the tale, and smaller hand-lettered words on the same pages carry bits of information, sometimes directly related to the story, sometimes not. The softly shaded pencil drawings add significantly to the book's appeal, though the illustrator's willingness to show a tinge of blood and a mouse tail dangling from the fox's mouth gives the pictures a more realistic view than is customary in books for this age level. Although both the story and the information are rather slight, libraries with a demand for animal books at the preschool and kindergarten levels will find this a useful selection. Carolyn Phelan
