Investing the mere price of either of these books will bring substantial rewards to the beginning investor. Scott's guide achieves its ambitious goal of explaining the intricacies of the stock market and its investment potential. Wallace's guide is broader in scope, aiming to educate novice investors about managing money with a variety of investments. Each author brings a significant amount of financial expertise to the topic. Scott (accounting and finance, Valdosta State Coll., Georgia) has written numerous investment books; Wallace served as business editor and financial columnist for the Boston Globe. A hallmark of both titles is their clear explanations of complicated material, free of jargon. Scott takes the intimidating subject of the stock market and successfully demystifies it; libraries that own Claude Rosenberg's classic Stock Market Primer (Warner, 1991. rev. ed.) will still want to purchase it. Wallace's guide, despite a chapter entitled "A Widow's Dilemma," which seems anachronistic in the Nineties, would also be a good choice for most libraries seeking to expand their personal finance collection.
