Close-up full-color artwork, including fully labeled anatomical cross-sections, introduces young readers to the rich variety of creatures that live in an undersea environment.

Kindergarten-Grade 3-- This title provides considerably more text and more detailed illustrations than previous entries in the series. Here, Parsons offers a peek into the "insides" of a shark, a starfish, a barnacle, an eel, a lobster, coral, an octopus, and a blowfish. Each double-page spread features a clear, bright full-color photograph (artistically embellished for the inside view), small cartoons, and text blocks. Each large photo appears as though a portion of the page has been rolled back to reveal an illustration of the internal organs of the creature. External features of interest are labeled as well. Humorous cartoons supplement the straightforward information with interesting bits of trivia: eels were once considered sea monsters; blowfish are eaten in Japan. An excellent introduction to marine creature anatomy with a high-interest format (after all, what child is not fascinated by guts?). --Valerie Lennox, Jacksonville Public Library, FL
