Reviews

Grade 6 Up-This prodigious volume is thorough in text and illustration. Following the example of the "Eyewitness" series, the in-depth discussion is matched with excellent-quality full-color photos, diagrams, and illustrations. There are cross-sections of interior organs and bone structures, along with exterior views. Some old-fashioned illustrations are included, with explanations as to how the theories they show have been disproved and updated. The book opens with general information: behavior, anatomy, extinction theories, fossilization and excavation, and how remains are restored. Following that are 55 representative profiles and a dictionary of all known dinosaurs. Similar in scope to the Macmillan Illustrated Encyclopedia of Dinosaurs and Prehistoric Animals (Macmillan, 1988), Lambert's book is more current. It is not a full prehistoric dictionary, but it does mention non-dinosaurs, such as pterosaurs and plesiosaurs. A superb cache of dinosaur data.

An A-to-Z dino dictionary covering all known species of dinosaurs is just one of the features in this Barney alternative that make it a terrific fact source. Lambert starts with basics, defining dinosaurs and looking at probable evolution, anatomy, and behavior. He discusses how such knowledge is obtained from fossils and restoration techniques. Full-page color photographs and precise, labeled drawings add to the value of this resource. Denise Perry Donavin

Reading this book is reminiscent of visiting a museum--the visual effects are spectacular, but the text seems overly abbreviated and sometimes unenlightening (for example, the section on dinosaur origins starts out, "Dinosaurs originated from microscopic marine organisms several thousand million years ago"). The reason to buy this book is the great pictures. There are wonderful cutaway models of dinosaurs showing reconstructions of their muscles and internal organs, photos of fossil bones mounted in dynamic poses, realistic clay models that look alive, and plenty of supplementary maps, drawings, and photos. Each of 55 dinosaurs is shown in a beautiful color layout, the "A to Z" of dinosaurs section lists 638 dinosaurs and the meanings of their names, and a short glossary helps clarify the technical vocabulary.
