PreSchool-K-A warm-and-fuzzy, feel-good charmer. The simple text that wraps around each double-page spread filled with delightful illustrations takes Little Rabbit through a fun-filled day that many preschoolers will recognize. Most of the pictures are too small for a group, but perfect for one-on-one sharing and ideal for nap or bedtime. Loving parents are both actively involved in the care of their child, with dad in charge of bath time, cleaning up, and reading stories. Each double page features a different setting (shopping, doctor's office, playground, etc.). The rabbits have all the rich personality of Kate Duke's guinea pigs with their watercolor tranquility and cheery, bright touches.

With its chipper text running sideways up the left page, across the top of each spread, down the right page and across the bottom (but not upside-down!)--and framing bountiful panels of winsome art--this large-format book is busy indeed. Appropriately so, since the diminutive rabbit whose day Porter chronicles is also busy, to say the very least. From the moment he climbs out of his crib and wakes his parents ("Not yet!" cries Mommy Rabbit as her son opens her eyelid with his paw and sprinkles juice on his father's head), Little Rabbit is up to his ears in mischief. He wreaks holy havoc on the breakfast table, steals the doctor's stethoscope during an office visit, makes a frightful mess at the grocery store and continues to play long after his father nods off in his efforts to get his son to sleep. Filled with cunning particulars, Porter's pictures tell much of her story, which will enable preschoolers to "read" between the lines. Ages 2-6.

Ages 3-5. Fourteen two-page spreads show Little Rabbit's day, from waking up to bedtime story. Each spread is boxed, with comments from Mother Rabbit spread around the frame. Sometimes there's a humorous contrast between Mother's quiet patter and the activities we see in the illustration. At other times, the pictures simply show the goings-on--at nursery school, for example, or during a visit to the doctor. The appeal lies largely in the gentle drawings of Little Rabbit and his domestic companions, and the book's format makes it better for lap sharing than for using with a group. Mary Harris Veeder
