Reviews

PreSchool-Grade 1-Sharply focused, full-color photographs of familiar objects arranged against a clean white background are the strength of this oversized alphabet book. A large lowercase letter appears on each page, surrounded by recognizable items beginning with that letter. Clearly labeled, the photos are interesting and varied; each page includes a child interacting with the toys, food, animals, or household goods depicted. A note to parents opposite the title page and an afterword called "ABC Games" suggest activities to help children learn about letters. The word "first" in the title may be misleading; uppercase letters are usually introduced first.

Ages 3-6. In the center of each page of this busy book are multicolored alphabet blocks, around which are arranged bright, color photographs of children playing or interacting with letter-appropriate objects--for example, apples, ants, and an acrobat for the letter A and beads, balloons, and butterflies for B. The pages are visually stimulating, and their contents will provoke much comment. A bee named Alphie the Alphabet Builder buzzes along the bottom of the pages, lining up the letters of the alphabet as the reader goes from page-to-page. More useful for lap sharing than as a book to use with a group, this will be a good extra title to add to large collections of concept books. Janice Del Negro
