She lived an unparalled life for women of her era. She graced the horse landscape of Kentucky with nobility and respect. She had the heart of a poet and the tenaciousness of a throughbred. Josephine Clay embraced all of these and more.

Somehow, like the Ashland Stock Farm where her legacy survived, she virtually vanished from the historical scenes. Those who knew her best, including her great-great grandson, H. Clay Simpson, Jr., did not forget her.

The "Pinoeer Horsewoman of the Bluegrass" will help preserve Josephine Clay's rightful place in horse history as well as her accomplishments as a writer and poet.

Mrs. Clay was a pioneer woman who traveled the rugged West with her children and blazed new frontiers with outstanding horse management while authoring exceptional novels and occassional poems.

About the Author:
H. Clay Simpson, Jr., was born in 1938 in Lexington, Kentucky where he attended Cassidy and Morton Schools and Lafayette High School. He studied English and history at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and after graduating, attended Columbia University in New York, where he received an MBA in banking and finance. During a forty-year career in international banking in New York and Londan, he maintained an active interest in Kentucky.

This biography of his great-great grandmother, Josephine Clay, continues a long-standing interest in Kentucky history. During eighteen months of research, he joined the board of Henry Clay Memorial Foundation and worked on the committee advising the Horse Park of Kentucky on an exhibition planned for the International Museum based in part upon this book.

He lives with his wife Katherine Meyer Simpson in Summit, New Jersey and Hardwick, Vermont.

Review:
"...she built the Ashland Stock Farm into one of the nation's foremost thoroughbred breeding operations." -- Art Jester in the The Lexington Herald-Leader

"...she never thought that a woman could not compete and win." -- Mauuray Evans in the Associate Press
