"The Red-Eye Fever" is about crocodile hunting in the former Belgian Congo, the author's first African adventure. Fresh from New York, she begins by slaying El Diablo, a famous 175 year-old, eighteen-foot crocodile that had been preying on the people for many years and was known to have consumed at least fifty inhabitants during its reign of terror. This adventure was followed by many others in the company of several extraordinary people she met at the time the Congo was preparing to take its place in African history as the first country, south of the Sahara, to gain independence from its colonial rulers.

The leading characters in The Omb Tree (a haunting symbol of the pampas) are an Anglo-American couple: Michael, and English engineer who decides to gamble on a new life starting a dairy farm, and his US wife Diana. They bring with them their child Philip, who was born with a cleft lip and palate, and whose suffering does not prevent him from coming to love this land, and defy adversity....
The book is about the struggles of the young couple in a country unknown to them. But the novel develops several strands beyond everyday life. While the novel is set in the countryside, we get flashes of wider political background behind it.
This novel should be widely praised for its verisimilitude, which bespeaks a loving care for this long-suffering land which, hopefully, after over 15 years of democratically elected government will never again be the prey of blood-thirsty dictators. -- Buenos Aires Herald, November 21, 1999
