"The Red-Eye Fever" is about crocodile hunting in the former Belgian Congo, the author's first African adventure. Fresh from New York, she begins by slaying El Diablo, a famous 175 year-old, eighteen-foot crocodile that had been preying on the people for many years and was known to have consumed at least fifty inhabitants during its reign of terror. This adventure was followed by many others in the company of several extraordinary people she met at the time the Congo was preparing to take its place in African history as the first country, south of the Sahara, to gain independence from its colonial rulers.

Review:
"This novel should be widely praised for its verisimilitude, which bespeaks a loving care for this long suffering land [Argentina]." --

It is always with great curiosity--and a bit of apprehension--that one reads books on Argentina written by foreign authors. In the case of this novel one can rest satisfied that the US author must have been living in this land quite a while and got to know it and its people rather well.

The leading characters in The Omb Tree (a haunting symbol of the pampas) are an Anglo-American couple: Michael, and English engineer who decides to gamble on a new life starting a dairy farm, and his US wife Diana. They bring with them their child Philip, who was born with a cleft lip and palate, and whose suffering does not prevent him from coming to love this land, and defy adversity....

The book is about the struggles of the young couple in a country unknown to them. But the novel develops several strands beyond everyday life. While the novel is set in the countryside, we get flashes of wider political background behind it.

This novel should be widely praised for its verisimilitude, which bespeaks a loving care for this long-suffering land which, hopefully, after over 15 years of democratically elected government will never again be the prey of blood-thirsty dictators. -- Buenos Aires Herald, November 21, 1999

From Publishers Weekly:
A former dancer with the New York City Ballet and her English husband, an engineer, start up a farm in 1960s Argentina in this atmospheric tale by Dallemagne-Cookson (The Bearded Lion Who Roars). Unfortunately, the emotional and psychological life of this young family is not nearly as memorable as the land to which they emigrate and about which they know so little. After a 36-day ocean voyage from London, Diana, Michael and two-year-old Philip, who was born with a cleft lip and palate, arrive in Buenos Aires in the spring of 1962, only to be greeted by revolution. Immediately, government chicanery depletes the couple's savings, raising the stakes of their venture. Uninhabited for more than 20 years, their farm is rumored to be haunted; dealing with the unforeseen rigors of rural lifeAand with neighbors who turn out to be NazisAtakes its toll on them until the question becomes whether their marriage can survive their South American stay. Precise geographical details intensify a tale otherwise marred by flat characters, awkward exposition and stilted dialogue. Wood-cut illustrations complement the novel's strong sense of place.
