About the Author

PAULA DESIMONE teaches decorative painting courses at such prestigious institutions as the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and the Fuller Museum of Art, the DeCordova Museum of Art, and the Danford Museum of Art, all in Massachusetts. A graduate of the Massachusetts Collage of Art, DeSimone is a dedicated artist and art educator whose work is widely exhibited in Museums and galleries. She currently heads a certificate program Island School of Design.

The term "decorative painting" conjures up a range of images: early humans recording the results of a mammoth hunt on the cave wall; artisans in French studios applying elaborate gilding to fine furniture; or Edwardian ladies painting roses on tole trays. Decorative painting is all of this and more.

We define decorative painting broadly as applying painted textures, forms, and patterns to useful surfaces. We also believe the best decorative painting is an art, not a craft. The contemporary decorative painter is motivated by many of the same desires that motivated these early decorative painters: to create unique, expressive living environmentsto earn appreciation and (perhaps some income) for one's talent to spend discretionary time in a way that combines utility with personal expression.
