(re)Visiting the Machine in the Garden, by Thomas Fisher:
Across fields plowed into variegated patterns, past farm sheds wrapped in rusting metal, down a logging road threaded through a deciduous forest, you come upon this house, suddenly, as if it were forgotten in the woods. Looking, at first, like an old ore dock by the lake, a common sight north of here, the Type/Variant House, as architect Vincent James calls it, seems dislocated in time as well as in space. Its facade, composed of stacked, nearly windowless volumes wrapped in oxidizing copper, appears modern and antiquated, robust and ruinous, all at once.
