About the Author

Isabel Allen trained as an architect before going into architectural journalism. Based in London, she is an award-winning journalist, and editor of the Architects' Journal. Ms. Allen has been a visiting critic and lecturer at various schools of architecture in the U.K.

The garden pavilion was created to be harmonious with the exterior landscape, providing a tranquil and sheltered environment in which to enjoy the rich natural landscape with its spectacular river views. Though the technical, structural detailing of the cantilevered building proved challenging, the final result presents an interior informed by the structure of the building. The sculptural form of the structure curves and twists taking advantage of the river views. A cantilevered floor stretches across the lake providing occupants with a rich visual journey across the water. The experience of being on the water. The experience of being in the water is heightened by areas of transparent glass flooring. The building is shaded by the dramatically extended roof overhang, providing shelter to an otherwise open interior...The overall effect is contemplative and peaceful.
