Gr 8 Up--Three series entries that offer students an abundance of differing viewpoints drawn from a wealth of sources. Each volume is a compilation of articles, essays, and book excerpts written by journalists, scholars, and activists who present opposing ideas. The strength of the series is its accessible format. Each chapter has a supporting section and an opposing section with three to six essays validating that viewpoint. The articles are annotated in the table of contents for quick study. They are relatively short but contain a healthy dose of research-supported statistics and strong opinion. Most of the writers use lots of examples to explain their ideas (many use highly publicized events), which keeps the style lively. Extensive annotated bibliographies and lists of organizations to contact are included. The indexes are clear and complete. This series is more in-depth and written for older audiences than the ``Opposing Viewpoints'' series (Greenhaven). Although the books will be used primarily for reports and debates, they will challenge YAs to evaluate the information and develop their own conclusions. Valuable research tools.
