Reviews

Gr 9 Up--This updated edition of the 1989 title is aimed at serious researchers and debaters. It is a well-balanced, properly documented presentation of complicated issues and contains recent statistics and fresh material. The articles are new; however, some authors appear in both editions (e.g., Tom Reagan, Peter Singer). Five chapters cover opposing views of the following topics: "Do Animals Have Rights?"; "Is Animal Experimentation Justified?"; "Should Animals Be Used for Food and Other Commodities?"; "Does Wildlife Need to Be Protected?"; and "What Issues Need to Be Resolved Within the Animal Rights Movement?" Each piece includes a one-paragraph introduction and a question to consider, and each chapter concludes with a periodical bibliography. Articles are written by acknowledged experts who use relevant examples to prove their points. The approach is sophisticated and the language saturated with well-researched facts. Discussion questions at the end of the book (divided by chapter) are complex, but may prove useful for teachers. The expanded list of organizations to contact includes institutions that are concerned with animal-rights issues on all sides of the debate. The index is more specific than the earlier title's, and the periodical and book bibliographies have been updated. A worthy replacement.
