Grade 9 Up?As in other volumes in the series, this book presents opposing positions on a contemporary topic. International and domestic terrorism, hate groups, and state-militia organizations are all included. Issues are: "Should Americans Fear Urban Terrorism?"; "Which Groups Pose an Urban Terrorist Threat?"; "Do the Media Encourage Terrorism?"; and "Do Antiterrorism Measures Threaten Civil Liberties?" Authors include notables, such as Nat Hentoff, Terry Anderson, and William Raspberry, as well as other journalists and experts in the field. Most articles are short and, for the most part, well written. Predictably, the most attention is given to the World Trade Center bombing in New York City in 1993 and the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995. Three entries deal with the Unabomber. The Iran hostage crisis, the hijacking of TWA Flight 847 to Beirut in 1985, and alleged instances of governmental terrorism, such as the disaster in Waco, Texas, are also mentioned. The book does not focus on the violent incidents themselves, however, but rather on the various components of a complicated issue. This is its major strength. The selections expose readers to the complexities of our society that contribute to frightening possibilities, whether actual or perceived.
