Gr 7 Up--Dudley has assembled primary sources related to events "Before Pearl Harbor," "Military and Diplomatic Controversies," "The Home Front," "Minorities and World War II," and "Historians Debate the `Good War.'" Boxes that further elucidate opinions are scattered throughout. Some of the ideas may seem a bit naive, racist, or downright wrong-headed to modern-day readers, but all are representative of their era. Women should not be in the Armed Forces. It's OK to intern people of Japanese descent but is unnecessary in the case of Italian and German Americans. The U.S. should agree to Stalin's postwar territorial demands. These are but a few examples. Only through such efforts as this will students learn that each historical question has at least two ways of being answered. A few archival photos and political cartoons break up the text. Extensive back matter includes a lengthy chronology; an annotated bibliography; and unnecessary, pedantic questions "For Discussion," a minor blemish in an otherwise wonderfully presented, thought-provoking addition to World War II literature.
