Gr. 9^-12. Another in the Opposing Viewpoints series, this examines the many aspects of the disease, its controversial prevention strategies, and its treatments. Since information about HIV/AIDS changes almost daily, the currency and the wide-ranging articles from both mainstream and less well known sources, juxtaposed to invite thought and debate, are especially valuable. Readers will learn of the existence of home testing kits for HIV and the discovery in 1996 of a serpentine chemokine receptor that "provides the key to creating new drugs." They also will be exposed to the many points of view regarding mandatory testing and partner notification, safe sex education, and needle exchange. The traditional format of brief introduction with author credentials and focus questions is of particular value in this book as well. It seems to synthesize the overall HIV/AIDS debate as it helps students ferret out information that is the essence of a specific point of view. With its usual extensive bibliographies, questions for further discussion, listing of organizations, and detailed index, the book will be a useful addition to collections supplying both research-paper materials and general HIV/AIDS education resources.
