Aaron, a pioneer boy in seventeenth-century New Hampshire, must save his sister's life by entering Evans Woods during a thunderstorm on Good Friday

Grade 2-4-One of the singing Mandrell sisters has teamed up with a writer of magazine articles to churn out a series of stories about U.S. national holidays. Somehow, Easter has been included. Its meaning is tied to religious freedom in this story about a fatherless family living in 17th-century Plymouth, New Hampshire. When nine-year-old Aaron's younger sister wanders into the woods during a thunderstorm, he tries to find her, even though he is afraid the woods are haunted. Evil spirits do not materialize, but a wolf does-a big bad wolf that is after little Mary. Aaron can't help her because he's stuck in the mud, so he grabs the wolf's tail, diverts its attention, and is pulled out of the mud at the same time. Later, safely home, the boy and his mother talk about courage and religious freedom, which is the reason they came over from Scotland. Strangely, the religion of this family is not identified. They dress and talk like Quakers, although it is doubtful that anyone ever really said "thou wentedst." The writing is wooden and melodramatic. Frailey's many darkly dramatic pastel illustrations match the mood of the story, but are of finer quality than the text. Neither religion nor history is illuminated by this unfortunate book.
