For a lonely, downtrodden miner in Arizona, a pack rat can be a nuisance or a blessing. Surprisingly, a pack rat can also be a friend.
The miner suffers his fair share of ups and downs during a particularly eventful week. For him, even a simple siesta, or nap, becomes a misadventure.
Things only get worse as every day, every step of the way, a little, mischievous pack rat creates a minor catastrophe for the miner. Outlaws relieve him of some of his burdens but also contribute to the miner's maladies.
In the end, though, the pack rat provides the key to the miner's happiness.
Cleverly written, this punny story relies on the whimsical illustrations to provide the perfect context for the playful words. In addition to creating a warm read-to-me atmosphere, this combination of words and pictures educates children as it entertains them. It also makes the book an ideal choice for parents to enjoy with their children, as they laugh and learn along the way.
This inspirational tale of perseverance and positive thinking persuades children, and their parents, never to give in--never to give up. When things are going badly, they %ican%r get worse. However, ultimately, situations improve and problems are resolved.

The author of several books, Marian Harris has also worked as a ghostwriter, editor, and high-school teacher. One of her books, Goose and the Mountain Lion, which was illustrated by her husband, Jim, received the 1995 Children's Colorado Book Award.
Jim Harris, who met his wife, Marian, in college, is a prolific illustrator of children's books, including the best-selling Three Little Javelinas and Ten Little Dinosaurs, each with more than 200,000 copies in print. He resides with his wife in the mountains of Colorado.
About the Author
Jim Harris is a prolific illustrator of children's books who employs great detail and humor in his artwork. His trademark style has earned him numerous awards, including a silver medal from the Society of Illustrators, the coveted Communication Arts' Award of Excellence, and the Colorado Children's Book Award. Harris has also written and illustrated a long list of children's books, including Dinosaur's Night Before Christmas and The Three Little Dinosaurs, both published by Pelican Publishing Company.
