From the Inside Flap:

Pink, daughter of the fierce pirate, Red Beard, longs for a life of adventure on the high seas with her father. She dreams of lands from Zanzibar to New Orleans, of pearls and diamond rings, of gold and treasure, and of all the interesting people she might meet.

When her father takes her on a voyage, she finds that his life is not at all what she imagined. For starters, they sail under a scary old flag with skull and crossbones--that would never do--and Pink adds a bit of lace to make it pretty.

When a countess is kidnapped, the other pirates are mad because her trunk of treasure has only dusty old books! And when Pink saves her from certain peril, Red Beard is angry because pirates are supposed to be mean, not make friends and play!

Pink demands to be taken back home to her mother when she realizes that if she stays with her father, she will have to do bad things. She dreams for herself the life of a pirate where the tales she collects are the only wealth she needs.

Jan Day grew up in Cuba, Illinois, an island in the middle of cornfields, but always dreamed of adventures at sea, just like Pink. Since then she's lived in many places including New York, Arizona, Hawaii, Louisiana, New Mexico, and Florida, where she now lives with her husband and daughter. In addition to children's stories, she writes short fiction, poetry, and novels. She has a strong interest in literacy, was chair of the Kauai, Hawaii, Literacy Program for five years, and has presented poetry workshops for children.

Janeen Mason's favorite activity is adventuring. She has been up, down, over, and through many an exciting quest with her own band of rowdy pirates, Jenna, Kevin II, and Kate, who have grown up and are off in search of their own treasures. Ms. Mason and her husband sail the Gulf Stream by themselves from their home in Stuart, Florida. The art of Janeen Mason can be found on posters, puzzles, notecards, and apparel. She creates art for nature stores and oceanographic institutions. The Pirate, Pink is her first picture book.

From the Back Cover:
