From Library Journal:
In this guide to safe and effective diets, Scanlon, a registered dietician and author of The Wellness Book of I.B.S. ( LJ 12/89), notes that a diet's purpose can range from losing or gaining weight to controlling a medical problem. She divides her book into two sections: Weight Control, includ ing enrollment programs, weight-loss camps, programs for children, and medically supervised programs; and Medical/Health Diets, covering 25 medical conditions. Within these categories, she reviews selected diet plans and self-help books, describing whom the diets are for and how they work. Stressing the importance of working with a physician, she also gives a nutritional evaluation based on the recommended dietary allowances (RDA) of the Food and Nutrition Board, cost, potential drawbacks, and in some cases an excerpt from a second opinion. While her nutritional information is valuable, Scanlon discusses other topics too briefly. For example, in the section on costs, she does not mention available payment plans or insurance coverage. Still, this book is strongly recommended for health/consumer collections.
