PreSchool-Grade 2?Schlossberg debuts with a story that has great appeal. Ray likes to pretend his tricycle is a big red truck. One Saturday morning, instead of doing his chores, he sets off on a fanciful journey "to see the wide open country." As he runs into a series of mishaps, his parents (in his mind's eye a police officer, a waitress in the diner, etc.) help him out and encourage him to do some chores as well. For instance, when he gets stuck in a ditch, a mechanic (aka Dad) suggests he mow some grass in order to pay for the tow. Muted colored-pencil drawings help to swing the story from Ray's fantasy to the real Saturday happenings. A fun title for youngsters with a fascination for big rigs, and for all who like to pretend once in a while.?Beth Irish, Orange Public Library, CA

First-time author-illustrator (and real-life truck driver) Schlossberg scores with this good-natured picture book that cleverly juxtaposes fantasy and reality. While helping his parents around the house one Saturday, Ray pretends his tricycle is a big rig and sets off to explore the "wide open country." Readers are treated to scenes from the boy's daydream (zipping down the highway in a bright red 18-wheeler, eating at a truck-stop cafe, crashing into a ditch, getting stopped for speeding) as well as more mundane events (doing the dishes, weeding, mowing the lawn) that serve as springboards for Ray's imagination. Schlossberg's frisky colored-pencil sketches exude a '50s mood, continually delighting with a variety of well-chosen angles and perspectives. Ages 3-5.
