Review

The Visual Basic 5 Programmer's Reference is a thick, detailed encyclopedic reference for Visual Basic (VB) functions, statements, objects, language constructs, operators, data types, and, of course, intrinsic and custom controls, along with their properties, methods, and events. It's clearly printed, solidly bound, and provides information on all current versions of VB including the Control Creation Edition and Visual Basic for Applications. An alphabetized index at the beginning of the volume lets you quickly find page references for thousands of elements and shows you which editions of VB support each element.

In short, The Visual Basic 5 Programmer's Reference is a superb VB reference. The only question is whether it gives the programmer more than VB 5's own excellent help system. This may depend on your working style, but for most users, the answer is probably yes. This is not a mere dump of the Microsoft documentation. Often the explanations are far clearer than those from VB's help system, and tips and code samples can be very helpful when you're exploring a new control or other aspect of the development system. There is also much to be said for a physical reference that brings together lots of information about a single object in a format that's easy to browse or study. If you often find yourself wishing that VB's help system gave you more detail or clearer explanations, you'll like having this book within reach.
