Condition: Gut. Originally published in 1915. VIII, 258 S. sehr guter Zustand / very good condition - "The Anglo-Norman empire of the twelfth century was the marvel of its day, while the history of the Norman kingdom of Sicily showed that the Norman genius of assimilation and political organization was not confined to the dukes of Rouen," writes the distinguished medievalist Charles Homer Haskins in his engaging and authoritative book The Normans in European History. Professor Haskins traces Norman history from the great Viking invasions of the ninth century to the French conquest of Normandy in 1204. French civilization came to England through the Normans, and with Norman coloration. The Norman kingdom of Sicily and southern Italy, at its height in the twelfth century, became the confluence of Greek, Arabic, and Latin cultures, and the intellectual movements that flourished in its courts and monasteries anticipated and evolved into the new thinking of the Renaissance. -- Professor Haskins covers the conquest of England by Duke William, "the central fact of the eleventh century," and describes the nature of the Norman, or Angevin, empire that under Henry II extended from the Scottish border to the Pyrenees. From the great seats of Norman power in Rouen and Caen, to the Sicilian courts of oriental splendor, the author examines the sources of Norman strength, their agricultural and seafaring traditions, their commercial and financial talents, their art and architecture, and their genius for colonizing and building stable societies, perhaps their greatest legacy to the rise of modern Europe. And he observes two distinctive characteristics descending from their Viking origins: initiative, which showed itself most powerfully in England, and assimilation, most evident in Sicily. "They were never more Norman than in adopting the statesmanlike policy of toleration and assimilation which led to their ultimate extinction."
