What a job, but somebody had to do it! In preparation for this book, I took two years and drove more than 10,000 miles, visiting every part of Maryland, Delaware, and Washington, D.C., meeting many of the friendly, fascinating people who make their lives there. I found hundreds of great places to visit, all within easy driving distance of each other and the Capitol: in the west, verdant mountains, farms and lakes; wonderful museums and restaurants in sophisticated Baltimore; the polished boat culture of the Chesapeake and laid-back attitude of the Eastern Shore; the elegant estates and white-sand beaches of Delaware, and much more. History, active recreation, relaxation, urban delights, and great food--please share my delight in these American treasures! And remember--crab cakes are not a diet food.

About the Author

Joanne Miller has been on the road her entire life--her father was a freelance photographer who captured highlights of the budding national park system in black-and-white. "My father showed me the unique beauty and variety of the United States, from the fantastic rock formations of the Mojave Desert to the brilliance of autumn leaves in the Poconos. He always said, ‘I don’t know why people cross the ocean when America has so much to see’, and I agree--partially because I never have to worry about asking where the bathroom is in Portuguese.”

Joanne is the author of the Pennsylvania Handbook (Moon, 2nd Ed. 2001) and numerous articles on travel and writing. Her fiction work has been published in Carve Magazine and various anthologies. In 2001, she was chosen as a fellow to attend the Spoleto Writer’s Conference in Spoleto, Italy.

Joanne is currently at work on a “factional” novel set in San Francisco before the 1906 earthquake and a travel guide to Marin County (Sasquatch Press).
