Synopsis

A common housefly has more than 4,000 six-sided lenses in each of its compound eyes. Cats can see in the dark. An owl's vision is so powerful that it can spot a tiny scurrying mouse from hundreds of feet away. Every animal in nature has eyes that are specially adapted to its environment.

In EyeOpeners! you'll discover the amazing variety of animal eyes, and you'll find out how each of these animals uses its eyes to survive. Filled with the beautiful close-up photographs of Monika and Hans Dossenbach, this book brings you eyeball-to-eyeball with some of nature's most incredible creatures and offers every reader a truly eye-opening experience!

Reviews

Grade 2-4-How do animals view each other and the world around them? How do they see? The book is organized by eye type, description, or kind of vision: "Compound Eyes," "Antenna Eyes," "Underwater Eyes," etc. A wide variety of mammals, birds, reptiles, and other creatures are introduced. The brief text consists only of captions and includes just a few facts about the kind of vision these animals have. There is no explanation as to how these different types of eyes work. This profusely illustrated book includes lots of close-up photographs; each two-page chapter has a large, full-color photo facing three or four smaller shots of different animals. While there is not enough information for reports, this title will suffice for browsing.
