Do you know what a baby ant is called? How about a baby grasshopper or a baby spider? I bet you don't know what a baby beetle is called. This book answers all of those questions and more.

Grade 3-5-These disappointing surveys present 10 creatures and details about their births. Clear, color photographs, many of which are close-ups, appear on every page, alternating between that of an adult and its young. Picture captions in the form of questions and answers serve as the main text ("What do you call a baby jellyfish?"). The next page provides the answer. "A baby jellyfish is called an ephyra (ehafyarah)." Boxed inserts offer miscellaneous information about reproduction, development, characteristics, etc. While the texts are clearly written, the amount of information is slight. Furthermore, the organization is haphazard-topics covered in some sections are missing in others, e.g., not all sections give the average number of eggs laid. In Crab, the section on the trout states that a baby is called a "fry"; however, the text fails to point out that this term applies to the young of many other fish as well. A bigger omission is that none of the species in the photos are identified, either by common or scientific name. This is most significant in Scorpion; readers may well want to know the names of the particular spider or butterfly depicted.
