Get a unique glimpse into our nation's history as you read the speeches of America's greatest leaders, exactly as they were delivered. Each speech is preceded by an introductory, fact-filled section that includes photographs, political background, and sidebars-all of which put each inauguration into clear historical perspective. The true character of each president is revealed through his words and by the message he chose to deliver on one of the country's most important days.

Grade 8 Up-This handsome volume provides an excellent format for comparing and contrasting this country's leaders through their inaugural speeches. It is interesting to note that almost all begin their addresses by saluting their predecessors and end by invoking God. Entries for each of the 43 men include a brief biography, a list of important events during his term(s), the text of the speech(es), and a few "Quotes to Note." The volume is illustrated with abundant, captioned, good-quality, black-and-white and full-color reproductions and photographs.

Gr. 7-10. This large-format book presents the inaugural speeches of the United States presidents from George Washington to George W. Bush. Each entry features a page of information about the man's life and his presidency. Sidebars feature fast facts about the period, information about the inauguration, and commentary on highlighted quotes from the speech. Illustrations include reproductions, some in color and some in black-and-white, of period paintings, photos, and engravings as well as portraits of each president, his first lady, and vice president. Although the volume is expensive and few would think to consult it for general information about the presidents, it is informative and the collection of inaugural speeches is up-to-date.
