Most of us find it impossible to comprehend what traversing America on foot would be like. Equally difficult is understanding the effort involved in running 25 to 27 miles per day for 124 consecutive days. Yet Reese accomplished this feat at the age of 73, with the purpose of "awakening people over age 65 to the fact that they have much more physical potential than they realize." Reese kept a daily journal of his experiences as he ran, and these entries comprise the bulk of the book. He writes mostly about the people and places he encountered in the 12 states he crossed. His account will appeal mainly to long-distance and ultra-distance runners. However, even weekend joggers with the secret desire to try long-distance running will take comfort as the author talks about aches and pains and the mystery of fluctuating energy levels. This is appropriate for most public library collections.
