Kevin Saundeers was born and raised on a farm in the Heartland of America. A 1981 grain elevator explosion in Corpus Christi, Texas, hurled Kevin over 300 feet onto a parking lot, paralyzing him from the chest down. Doctors said he would not survive, but he did. He not only recovered, but also became a Paralympic champion. Kevin Saunders was the first person with a disability to serve on the Presidents Council on Physical Fitness. He was appointed by President George Bush and the only person to be reappointed by the Clinton Administration.
I heard of Kevin long before I actually met him and knew that his story was almost unbelievable. I knew he had survived a dreadful grain elevator explosion in Texas, was aware that he had to overcome incredible physical and personal obstacles and I knew he had become----through the sheer force of his will----the world's greatest wheelchair athlete and an eloquent spokesman. What fuels my admiration is the knowledge that he most frightening moment in my life ----and I was hot down twice in World War II ---- are not equal to what Kevin experiences on a regular basis. "THERE'S ALWAYS A WAY" is the story of how Kevin responded to an almost overwhelming situation, changing himself and his life in the process. I believe you will find it inspiring and uplifting. -- President George Bush
