Offers advice on designing arrangements, selecting containers, designing through color, choosing a location, and creating a cutting garden

Drawing upon the most notable floral styles throughout history, and particularly on the paintings of the impressionists, flower experts Derek and Carolyn Fell espouse a lovely "natural" aesthetic of flower arranging that stresses a casual elegance. Their beautiful book covers all aspects of the art: elements of style (line vs. mass, symmetrical vs. asymmetrical, harmony and proportion); the properties of each color and the most important flowers in each; the appropriateness of different containers for various types of arrangements; conditioning methods to prolong the life of cut blooms; choosing the proper display location; and growing a cutting garden. Crammed with specifics, the informative text offers terrific grounding in learning how to create your own arrangements rather than documenting the step-by-step construction of particular arrangements, effectively teaching you how to develop the skills and knowledge that will enable you to arrange flowers like a pro. --Amy Handy
The style of flower arranging treasured by the Fells, and featured in their lavishly illustrated guide, gains inspiration in large part from the canvases of impressionist and postimpressionist artists. It is an exuberant style associated with country interiors, although today it appears just as appropriate for city lofts. The book's approach is quite basic, with a brief history of different styles followed by explanations of fundamental design elements as they pertain to flowers. Expect beautiful photographs that provide ample motivation to try one's hand at creating handsome bouquets for each room in the house. Just a bit of information on dried flower arrangements is included, but the Fells do encourage the idea of a cutting garden, offering suggestions for the best flowers to grow. Alice Joyce
