The Jewish tradition is rich in folklore and story, as contemporary anthologists/ retellers such as Howard Schwartz have shown. This new collection, compiled and retold by two rabbis, is the first (known to this reviewer) to be organized by life stages-birth, circumcision, bar mitzvah, love and marriage, divorce, conversion, old age, and death-and is meant to provide background or ancillary reading for the ritual events that commemorate these stages. The often lively tales chosen from a wide assortment of biblical, Talmudic, and folkloric sources do indeed help to illuminate the Jewish life cycle. Unfortunately, some are repetitive of others, which is helpful, perhaps, for scholarly analysis but not for the general reader for whom the book is intended. The lack of a glossary also limits the book's usefulness for the general reader. Recommended for special collections.
