About the Author:

When Louis Ginzberg died in 1953, he was recognized as the world's outstanding scholar in the field of Talmudic learning. His studies were carried on at the universities of Berlin, Strasbourg and Heidelberg, and since 1902 at the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York, where he served as distinction as Professor of Talmud for more than half a century. He was born in Lithuania in 1873, and he settled permanently in the United States in 1899. The Legends of the Jews, of which this book is an abridgment, took seventeen years to complete. The index alone to the complete work runs to 612 pages, and the notes fill two volumes. When Harvard University gave him an honorary degree at its Tercentenary Celebration, the citation called him a "profound scholar of the laws and legends in Talmudic literature."
