Grade 2-5?When Kevin hears a man saying, "Ready to leave Friday's Station? It's time to saddle up and head out!," he stands in utter amazement for he had just been viewing a video about the Pony Express at the National Postal Museum, and now he is suddenly a part of the action. Not only has Kevin become a Pony Express Rider, but he has become the bravest of all the Riders?Warren Upson, better known as Boston. His mission is to take the sad news to Sacramento that the Civil War had begun. His duties are extraordinary?to race the telegraph wires and to endure blizzards, floods, wolves, exhaustion and hunger. Rider and pony formed a courageous team that rode 1966 miles in a relay action from St. Joseph, Missouri to Sacramento, California. Although the existence of the Pony Express was a brief 18 months, its contribution to American history was significant. It ushered in the transcontinental telegraph and the transcontinental railroad. The recorded narrative dramatically intensifies the adventure and the excitement associated with the Pony Express. Listeners identify readily with the characters of the story and become involved in the action-filled plot. Appropriate sound effects complement the text to produce an effective audio package. Young students will benefit from this meaningful glimpse into American history. They will gain a better appreciation for the development of the nation, and will be stimulated to discuss related issues: personal character, commitment, courage, determination. Elementary school teachers and librarians will discover many curriculum-based activities in this exemplary program.?Patricia Mahoney Brown, Franklin Elementary School, Kenmore,
