9781569241738: The Life and Works of Leonardo Da Vinci

Synopsis

Leonardo da Vinci was an extraordinary man, the original Renaissance polymath with many talents - as artist, musician, scientist, engineer and mathematician. He worked for a number of rich patrons, including Cesare Borgia, Pope Leo X and King Francois I of France, and his commissions ranged from painting such famous works as 'The Last Supper,' to working as an engineer in charge of the defenses of Milan. Many of his finest paintings are shows here, including the 'Mona Lisa' and the 'Virgin of the Rocks,' as well as many drawings and designs from his 'Notebooks' that make clear the extent and scope of his genius.

This series on the lives and works of the great painters provides an invaluable guide. In each volume, a short introduction gives a brief biography of the artist and explains the elements of his or her painting style. Fifty paintings are faithfully reproduced in full color, and an extended caption to each clearly explains the background to the work, its significance in the history of art, and its position in the complete canon of the artist's work.
